Seeing Better

When I took my near teenage boy to the doctor this past summer for his physical, the nurse commented that his left eye was weaker than his right.  My boy commented that is what the school nurse had said last year during the vision checks as well.  I figured that even if neither the school and nor the doctor recommended followup, I should probably anyway.

We went to the optometrist several weeks ago.  He said that my son’s prescription was very slight, and that if he wasn’t going to wear glasses, it would be a waste of money.  Of course my boy was adamant against them and wouldn’t even look at frames.  Then school started.  Sure enough, one day he came home and thought that he could probably see the blackboard better if he had some glasses.  So guess who is wearing perfectly round eyeglass specs today for the first time . . .

On the drive to school, which is less than a mile, twice he commented on how much better he could see.  The neighbor’s house wasn’t a blur.  The cars on the road were not a blur.  He loves his new look.

The doctors and nurses all thought that he saw good enough.  That is a mantra of the world — just good enough.  What God wants for believers is not simply good enough, but abundance of all good things.  I want to see with God’s glasses; when they are on, everything is clearer.  And even if I can’t see in full, faith sharpens the image.

Pretty simple, eh?  Pretty obvious, too.  It’s not so easy to put into practice especially if your glasses are scratched like mine.  Seeing better is worth it, though, don’t you think?

“Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art – Thou my best thought by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.”  Ancient Irish Hymn
